Dr. Sohel Ahmed

Dr. Sohel Ahmed is one of Bangladesh’s leading experts in biomedical laboratory sciences, molecular diagnostics, and biomedical research. With more than three decades of experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, clinical diagnostics, laboratory systems development, and research, he has played a significant role in advancing biomedical education, research infrastructure, and diagnostic laboratory capacity in the country. His technical expertise covers the design and establishment of molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, clinical pathology, histopathology, diagnostic, and transfusion medicine laboratories.

Ahmed served as a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh and is a former pro-vice chancellor for administration at the university. He has held several academic and administrative leadership roles, including chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and proctor of Jahangirnagar University. He also contributes to national academic governance as an academic council member of Bangladesh Open University.

As sub-project manager under the World Bank-funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project, Ahmed led a major capacity-building initiative at Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The project renovated research laboratories and established advanced biomedical research facilities, helping create the department’s capacity to support Ph.D.-level biomedical sciences research.

Ahmed earned a Ph.D. in medical sciences from Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Medicine in Japan. His doctoral research focused on cellular apoptosis, and his defense was evaluated as “Excellent.” He also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biochemistry from the University of Dhaka.

His international research experience includes postdoctoral work at the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Tsukuba, Japan, where he worked on environmental biodefense, molecular toxicology, and environmental health sciences. Earlier in his career, he worked as a bacteriologist and research officer at BIRDEM Hospital, a major diabetes and endocrine research and treatment institution in Bangladesh. He also contributed to clinical research with the Bangladesh H. pylori Study Group, which helped shape national recommendations for triple therapy in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Ahmed has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles on public health toxicology, antibiotic resistance, molecular toxicology, genetic risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, tumor biology, and infectious disease diagnostics. He has supervised Ph.D., M.Phil., and master’s-level research and regularly reviews research proposals for institutions including Bangladesh’s University Grants Commission and the Bangladesh Medical Research Council.
